EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
A meeting of the Dunedin Sub-branch of the Otago Educational Institute was hold in the Y.M.C.A. rooms on Friday. The president, Mr C. M‘Kinnon, presided over e fair attendance of members. The first important business of the meeting was to consider the formation of a reading circle, and after free discussion it was decided to appoint a sub-committee to go fully into the matter and report to a meeting of the branch at an early date. The sub-committee consists of Miss Sullivan, Messrs Jones, Smith, and Forrester (convener). Tile reports of the Dunedin Sub-branch delegates to the New Zealand Educational Institute conference were presented to the meeting and discussed. A hearty vote of thanks and appreciation to the delegates was passed. Mr J. P. Hawke also gave an account of his impressions of the conference, and mentioned many facts of interest to those present. On the whole, he said, the conference had been a snf-"ssfut and an ably-conducted onet and on Id be productive of much good , both teachers and the pupils entrusted to their care. As was customary at such conferences, and as was in keeping with the policy of the iSI .Z.E.1., many remits wore passed deaKng with the welfare of the child—increased facilities for his intellectual, physical, and moral benefit —better eonipmont of schools, better supplies of school material, better service, better staffing, and further enhancing of the status of the leaching profession. Though it was often a far cry before outlined reforms finally became part of educational legislation, it was well for institute members to note that many of the improved conditions of teacher and pupils had been the results of such conferences.
