HORGRATA’S CARGO.
REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT. On Saturday morning the following tote' gram was despatched to the Hon. J. (». Coates by the secretary of the, Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association in connection with the Dunedin cargo on board the steamer Hororata, which is held up at Lyttelton:— At a large meeting of importers held here last evening very strong expressions of opinion were voiced that we have a fair claim in the circumstances of the strike to receive all the help which the Government can give, and also that the Government should take the whole question in hand with a view to a quick solution. In regard to the quotation for the carriage of the Hororata’s cargo to Dunedin, the Railway Department has exercised the option (page 103 of the new tariff) to charge on measurement, which makes any arrangement quite impossible; indeed, In the case of a large proportion of the measurement goods it would be very much cheaper to send them as weight under ordinary rates. Surely this is a case where the department ought to figure out the actual cost of performing this particular service and quote a rate that, while giving a reasonable profit, would yet make an arrangement possible. I’lease reply early, *o that we may call another meeting.
