CAVERSHAM HOUSEHOLDERS.

. AN ASSOCIATION FORMED. A Householders' and Ratepayers’ Association was formed at a meeting held at Caversham on Tuesday night. Mr JJ. S. 'M'Pherson presided and briefly outlined the objects for which the meeting had assembled. Mr R. B. Middlemiss moved that an association bo formed, and Mr W. Kirkham spoke in support of the motion, which was carried unanimously. Various speakers stressed the necessity for better telephone facilities and a double tramline over the hill. One said that the Normanby car should pick up at the Stock .Exchange passengers from the Caversham car. Mr F. Wilkinson pointed out that the district had had a through tram service to the station, but that was taken away and given to the St Kilda people, not ratepayers of the city. Mr R. H. S. Todd claimed that ny having a single tram line along Wilkie road Caversham would have practically a duplicate line. The single line, he proceeded, would not cost nearly so much as would the double line over the hill. He thought the great bulk of the people at tlio end of Caversham should be catered for instead of the few on the hill at Eglinton. Cr J. E. MacManus stated that the maintenance allocations totalled £46,994, and the amount for Caversham (including St Clair and South Dunedin to the Bay road) was £4.345. Of drainage allocations £I6OO was to be spent on Sidey street. His hearers would remember that the flood waters, overflowing from Sidey street, had swept a portion of Mornson street to a private properly. The amount borrowed by the council for works was £200,000, for a period of live years, and the whole of that amount could easily be spent in the suburbs alone. When they voted for expenditure on trams and buses they did not vote for any specified route. In reference to buses, he said that the Maori Hill motor had not come up to expectations, but the district, with M oodhaugh, was being fried with a view to finding out whether tramline extensions were justified. Twelve more buses were being procured to cope with traffic at Exhibition time and prevent opposition from elsewhere which would affect the present low fares. The following office bearers were elected: —President, Mr D. S. M'Pherson; vice-president, Mr R. H. S. Todd; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. C. White; committee—Messrs J. Lavender, F. Wilkinson, H Dunn, F. Foster, T. L. M'Lean, R. B. Middlemiss, G. S. Roberts, P. Cairns, and T. M'Cracken. , . . „ , . The minimum subscription was fixed at 2s 6d.
