OTAGO HOSPITAL BOARD.

COMMITTEE REPORTS. The following are among the reports which will" be submitted to the Otago Hospital Board at its next meeting: The Sanatorium Committee wilt report that an application made for the admission of a patient to the Pleasant Yalley Sanatorium has been declined in view of their being no vacancy in the institution.. A letter of thanks have been sent to Mrs Ireland, of Goodwood, for donation of flowers, fruit, and vegetable# to the Pleasant Valley Sanatorium. The Hospital Committee will recommend that a psychopathic clinic be instituted at the Dunedin Hospital, and Dr Macdonald be appointed to undertake the work. Dr Buchanan, medical superintendent at Seacliff, has notified his willingness to co-operate with Dr Macdonald in the scheme. That a reply be sent to the Masseurs’ Registration Board of New Zealand in terms of the recommendation of the board’s Massage Committee —viz.:—Remedial exercises supplementary course; A six mouths' course in the subject may be arranged in any year; the course to begin in April and the fees to be £23. Extension of massage course; Having heard the views of Miss Roberts, the Massage Committee in the meantime do not recommend the proposed extension of the massage course tcj, two years. Further information should bo obtained from Australia in regard to theirmassage curriculum and the conditions required for registration. Misa Roberts suggested that a re-arrangement of the present syllabus to bring the same more into lino with the C.S.M.M.G. course would probaoly meet the desires of the English authorities rather than a mere time extension of the course. This matter will be the subject of a report later by Miss Roberts, which will be forwarded to the Masseurs’ Regisration Board. Miss Roberts pointed out that the C.S.M.M.G. course is of 15 months’ duration for the pupil certificate, and not two years, as was stated in the letter from she Masseurs' Registration Board, dated June 10, 1925. That authority be granted for the appointment of an additional typiste at the Dunedin Hospital to assist in the records department and office, at a salary at the rate of £9O per annum. That the application from the United Friendly Societies’ Council that accredited sick visitors be permitted to visit members of their respective orders in the Hospital at other than the statutory visiting times be approved, and the medical superintendent be authorised to arrange accordingly. The proposal temporarily to install -the deep therapy apparatus has been declined, and same is to be held over pending the erection of the new radiological block or part of it. The recommendation of the Massage Committee that no candidate bo allowed to sit for the massage examination until a certificate ha s been obtained from tho sister-in-charge of the massage department that the candidate’s practical work has been satisfactory has been approved. A certificate that the candidate’s work has not been satisfactory requires confirmation by the Massage Committee. In reference to the term of engagement, if nurses are found suitable at the end of tho first three months they are to sign on for one year only, and if quite satisfactory at the end of that time they are to sign on to complete three years’ training, otherwise the engagement is to, cease. After a nurse has passed her final examinations, an agreement is to be entered into for her to complete the fourth year, provided she is satisfactory. In ' the fourth year, special training is to be given in the operating theatre and by attending classes in massage and dispensing, and by relieving sisters on holiday some experience in administration may be gained. The following are the statistics for the month of June:—Fever Hospital: No admissions, five discharges, and one patient at present remaining in the Fever Hospital. Infirmary ward: Four admissions, two discharges, two deaths, and 49 patients at present remaining in the infirmary ward. Messrs Rennick and Co. s tender for the necessary plumbing work at the Children’s Ward, Dunedin Hospital, for the sum of £l7O, the board to provide the sinks, has been accepted. The Finance Committee will recommend jthat authority be granted to purchase from the National Electrical and ■ Engineering Co. (Ltd.)' a “Thor” No. 90 electric ironing machine (gas heated with 50in roll) for tha Batchelor Maternity Hospital. The resolution adopted by the board on May 15, appointing • the Roxburgh Hospital Committee, be amended in so far that the name of Mrs Weaver be substituted for Mr Weaver as-a member. Authority has been granted for this appointment of a probationer at Louisa Roberta Hospital, Middlemarch, subject to the approval of the local committee. Advice has been received from Mr A. S. Ketvland that Mrs Watson has intimated that she desires to terminate her agreement with the board .in regard to the Roxburgh Hospital, and that she is unable to continue the present arrangement on account of illhealth, It is suggested that the board should take over the fittings and furniture in the hospital at valuation, and same has been referred to the Roxburgh Hospital Committee to report. The chairman of the board. Dr Rowlands, and the secretary have been authorised to make further representation to the department in regard to the amount subscribed by the Southland and Waitaki Hospital districts in connection with increased supply of radium. The radiologist has advised that it will not now be necessary to proceed with the ordering of the lOOgrs of radium, as previously ..requisitioned for and approved of, in view of the early proposals to be submitted for the establishment of a radium emanation plant, and the radiologist 'has been requested to report fully as to such requirements. Intimation has been received from the Controller of Customs that the Minister proposes to place the sum of £lB 7s 7d on the Estimates of his department during the coming session to enable a refund to be made to the board of the primage duty paid on radium in February last. Authority has been granted to continue the agreement with the Vincent Hospital Board until September 30, 1925. la the meantime an endeavour will be made to hold a conference with that board. A letter of has been sent to the Red Cross Society for donation of cigarettes, fruit, and underclothing to the Wakari Hospital. !
