UNEMPLOYMENT DOLE
AN INCREASE SUGGESTED. ERANK CRITICISM BY MR THOMAS. '.aa Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 8. . Received July 8, at 7.30 p.m.) A conference of the National Union of Bail way men at Southport passed a resolution charging the Government with failing to deal with the problem of Unemployment. An amendment was moved demanding an increase of the benefit to 30s for a man, 15s for his wife, and 10s for each, child. Mr Thomas opposed the amendment as ridiculous, and said that if these amounts could be paid what need was there for anyone to work at all. Moreover, who was going to pay for it. The problem of unemployment could only be solved internationally, but it was absurd that there was so much unemployment when millions could be spent immediately on developing the Empire. Whatever might be said of Russian methods he would fight to the death against their introduction into Britain. The amendment was defeated by 48 votes to 18. —A. and N.Z. Cable. THE INSURANCE SYSTEM.
