ANNUAL CONFERENCE. fßr.s Uni th Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 10. The annual meeting of the General Council of Education is being held today. Mr Caughley (Director of Education), in opening the conference, said that a number of the recommendations of the council made at last annual meeting had been given effect to during the past year. A number of open-air sciools was non in operation. The question of sex hygiene hod been considered by the commission whose report was beTore the Government. No action had yet been taken regarding r.he payment of secondary school teachers by the Education Department. Ho did noi know of any reason why the matter should not bo taken up definitely. As to agricultural instruction, the resolutions of the council had b?on put before the comnn'ssion which sat recently, and its report w:.s now about ready. 'The report on defective children had been published, and was being considered by the department chiefly concerned. It was hoped very soon that effect would be given to the commission’s recommendations bv the sotting up of a board to carry out what was suggested. The question of dealing with staff? and salaries of secondary and technical schools with a view to bringing about some degree of uniformity was niider coni side -ation. The varying principles between the two scales presented almost insuperable difficulties. He had not been aide to solve the problems. Committees were then set up to report on the various notices of motion, and the earned adjourned.
