ALLEGED SHEEP STEALING.
A FARMER CHARGED. (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, June S. Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day a shoop farmei in, the Mangaroa district, named Alfred James M‘Gregor was charged with stealing on May 12 35 sheep, valued at £45, the property of J. R. Murphy, and on February 15 stealing 12 sheep, valued at £l2, the property of A. J. Jackman. Murphy and iccused are.neighbours, and it was stated in evidence that at a muster at accused’s place 26 wethers were found, whiA were the property of Murphy, and bore his .mark, and also accused’s mark. In regard to Jackman’s sheep, accused said that when he was at MT.aurin s place looking for stragglers therei were 14 of Jackman’s sheep there. Jackman used to be his neighbour, but had left the district. M’Laurin said Jackman’s sheep were a nuisance, so accused took thdtn, and after a week or two put his earmark on (ho sheep. He made a note in his diary, intending to inform Jackman, and pay him when they met. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed for tril, bail being fixed—self •in £2OO and one surety ot £2OO, or two of £IOO.
