She was then towed to the Glasgow wharf for the purpose of supplying fuel to oil-burning vessel® calling at Wellington. , , The Union Company advises that the iora was due at Rarotonga on Tuesday from Auckland. The vessel, winch left Auckland on May 2, was sold to Papeete buyers for work in tho pearl fishing industry in the Islands.. The Ysabel, built in 1875, was formerly the Southern Cross, and for many years was used by the Melanesian Mission for visiting the various islands of Melanesia, Later she was sold to Captain Ross, who traded to the Islands with her for a number of years. Her last owners wore the Scales Company, who ran. her in the trade between Auckland and Niue Island. r rhe Ysabel also spent some months in idleness at an anchorage in the Auckland Harbour. HEBBURN DUE TO-MORROW. Messrs J. W. Swift and Co. advise that the C. and D. Line’s chartered steamer Hchburn is now due at Dunedin to-morrow from Lyttelton to discharge the remainder of her New York cargo, consisting of case oil and assorted merchandise. The Hebburn will sail early next week for Sydney. PAPANUI FROM NEW YORK. The A. and A. Line steamer Papanui, which arrived at Wellington on Monday morning from New York and Auckland, was expected to sail yesterday for Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin, and Australian ports to discharge the remainder of her American cargo. She is due here about Juno 13. SAN FRANCISCO MAIL STEAMERS. The B.M.S. Makura arrived at Papeete on Saturday morning from San Francisco. She was expected to leave Rarotonga on Tuesday for Wellington, and is due there at daybreak on Monday nest. The R.M.S. Tahiti, which left Wellington on tho evening of May 26 for San Francisco, reached Rarotonga on Saturday afternoon, and sailed the same evening for Papeete. RIMUTAKA LEAVES LIVERPOOL. Cable advice received by the Federal Line states that the Rimutaka left Liverpool on May 30 with cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland about July 12, and at Dunedin about July 27. i , THE CANADIAN SKIRMISHER. The Canadian Government Line steamer Canadian Skirmisher is due at Auckland at any time now from Halifax, via Panama. The vessel is laden with general Canadian cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin, and Bluff. Tho vessel will also load dominion products at the ports named for New York, Boston, and Montreal. She is due hero about June 20. CORNWALL AT GLASGOW. Cable news received by the Federal Line states that the steamer Cornwall arrived at Glasgow on May 23 from Lyttelton, via Panama. Tho vessel left Lyttelton on April 10. ' PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr D. S. Ken has joined the Breeze as chief engineer in succession to Mr W. Graham. Mr W. S. Fisk has replaced Mr A. A. Rixon as second mate on tho Sussex. Mr A, Williamson is now second engineer of the Ngakuta, vice Mr D. M’Murran. who has come ashore on sick leave. PLIMSOLL MARK SUBMERGED. Arriving at Wellington with his ship's Plimsoll mark submerged was a charge made against W. A. Hutchins, master of the steamer Shreveport, in the Magistrate's Court on Monday afternoon. Mr J. Prendeville, who prosecuted, explained that it was the vessel’s fourth visit to Wellington. When she arrived with oil fuel from California it was found that her Plimsoll mark was submerged 2ft. “It looks as though the fine is becoming a license fee,” ho commented. The magistrate (Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.) agreed, and imposed the maximum fine of £IOO. , WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE. SOUTH AFRICAN SHIPPING. In the face of the sad spectacle of the disastrous results of Slate-owned shipping ventures, the Government of the Union of South Africa is considering the acquisition of a merchant marine large enough to provide for the development of the foreign trade of the Union. An official announcement, has been made to the effect that the Government is willing to negotiate with the conference lines for a, modification of freight rates, but that in any case the Government is determined to protect South African business interests from being “bled by any shipping monopoly.” SUSSEX FROM EASTERN PORTS. The steamer Sussex, from Calcutta, via Rangoon, Singajjore, Samarang:, Townsville, Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton, arrived at Dunedin at 2 p.m. yesterday. The vessel, which is under charter to the Union Company, was berthed at the. Rattray street wharf to discharge the remainder of her cargo of Eastern products. The Sussex loaded at Calcutta, Rangoon, Penang, Singapore, and Samarang, and left the lastnamed port late in April. She arrived at Auckland ori- May 21 after an uneventful voyage. The Sussex is under the command of Captain J. F. S. Brown, who has with him tho following officers:—First, Mr G. Gibson; second, Mr 0. Eixcn; third. Mr N. Pearson; fourth, Mr D. Burgess; chief engineer, Mr W. S. Hull; second, Mr R. Proctor; third, Mr P. Huggett; fourth, Mr W. Gray; fifth. Mr J. London; sixth, Mr G. Boll; chief steward, Mr W. F. Rigby; wireless operator, Mr T. 0. Sexton; cadet, Mr J. Wilson; ship’s Mr N. Simons. The Sussex will sail to-morrow or on Monday for Sydney. She will afterwards return to Calcutta to load again for New Zealand ports.
