“LEARN TO SWIM WEEK.”

WELLINGTON PROPOSAL. The following remit to be submitted to the annual conference of the New Zealand Swimming Association, to be held in Christchurch next week, was read at a special meeting of the Otago Centre last night. The members, while agreeing with most of the clauses, left it to their delegates ar, the conference to deal with: 1. That a “Learn to Swim Week” bei hold throughout New Zealand whereweff swimming facilities exist and to bo run on somewhat the following lines: — 2. The Government bo approached for special donation or subsidy, say, £2OOO, and centres to enlist subscriptions. 3. The Royal Life Saving Society to cooperate and invite Mr Henry or some other competent official to come out from Home and give lectures, etc. 4. Rotary clubs’ support to be enlisted, also Education Department, school teachers, and anyone who would assist. 5. That a coach or prominent swimmer be sent overseas for instruction. 6. That the support of the press he enlisted and suitable articles, prepared for publication by prominent doctors, physical, and health specialists. 7. That picture suppliers be approached re the putting on of pictures having relation to swimming during the week. 8. That slow-motion picture of Weismuller (which is in New Zealand at present) be obtained for lecturing purposes, and any other picture of swimming or life-saving of an educational character. 9. That an organiser be appointed to go Abjnough New Zealand and \assist each centre and clubs in preliminary advertising and organising members of clubs for teaching learners. 10. That the expert coach take our best and most likely swimmers and others who desire, to become proficient in coaching. 11. That club members be organised into relays to attend at baths and beaches at stated hours, say. from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and evenings, where facilities exist, to tench anyone who applies for instruction. 12. Where possible to apply for use of baths free, nointing out to tho authorities the increased revenue they will receive as a result of the week. 13. And that special efforts be made during the week to increase tho membership of all clubs and in the formation of new clubs, otc.
