GENERAL NEWS.
Tho last meeting of the Albany Street School Committee was well attended. Mr A Dempster presided, A largo amount of routine business was dealt with, and reports in connection with tho break-up function were received. The Don. V 7. Downie Stewart, the Mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley), and the Key. Tulloch Yuille have accepted the committee’s invitation to speak. The decision of the committee of the recent jubilee celebration to award a jubilee dux gold modal annually was agreed to, members expressing the opinion that it waa an excellent idea. A draft programme for the annual concert in aid of the prize funds, to be held in Knox Sunday School Hall on December 11, was submitted. This function gives every promise of being an attractive evening’s entertainment. At the close of the meeting tho meeting the chairman convoyed to members the usual season’s greetings. Tho North-East Valley School Committee held its monthly meeting on Tuesday night, the following being presentMr J. Elliot (in the ohair), Mesdames Peart and G. B. Elliot, Messrs Laing, Manson, Reekie, Little, and Begg. A letter was received from the Education Board asking tho committee to pay over the balance of tho money due on the new playing area (£10). It was decided that the money be paid, but the treasurer was instructed to wait on the Education Board and point out that tho work had not been dona in a satisfactory manner, and to ask for an assurance that this would be set right. It was noticed that tho carpenters had completed their portion of the repairs to the school, and had left without repairing the fence on the Main road, and the attention of the board was also to oe drawn to this. A letter of thanks for condolence sent was received from Mr J. Reekie. The head master’s report stated that the roil number was at present 681, and that the average attendance for the quarter so far had been excellent. Measles had appeared in tho infant school during the past few days, and it was hoped that the outbreak would be only a mild one. Mr Magnus Thomson took up the duties of first assisant at the school on the first of the month. The break-up of the school was to be held on Thursday, December 16, the junior classes in the afternoon and the seniors at night; all to he in the Town Hall. It was reported that, following on a deputation to the City Council regarding accommodation in the Town Hall, authority had been granted tho General Committee to provide the extended seating accommodation asked for. Mr S. Little reported having added 30 new books to the library. The Ex-Pupils’ Association asked for permission to present special .nrizes at the break-up, and this was granted.
