TRADE TREATY

AUSTRALIA AND CANADA. A MELBOURNE MESSAGE. OTTAWA, November 4. A cable message from Melbourne published here states that strong opposition is developing in Australia to the Canadian Trade Treaty, and that tho Australian Government is being urged to denounce the treaty. Nothing of that kind has been heard by ollicial circles here, and it is not expected that tho opposition in Australia wid carry weight at this late date. It. is felt that Australia will not back out now without committing a serious breach of 1 diplomatic and inter-imperial relations. Tho treaty will doubtless be ratified by the Canadian Parliament when it meets, probably with slight changes requested by Australia. If Australia indicates a desire to have tho -treaty confirmed, and made effective, such action could be taken at any time by an Order-in-Council regarding ttyo more vital portions, particularly tho duty on raisins.—A. and N.Z. Gable.
