LIQUOR IN KING COUNTRY.
WAIAPU SYNOD PROTESTS,
(Pkb United Press Association.! NAPIER, September 13. The Waiapu Diocesan Synod last night unanimously carried the following resolution ; “That this synod strongly protests against the attempts being made to induce the Government to break the solemn cove; nant that was entered into with the Maori people in the King Country when the Natives of that area freely gave all land required for the construction of railways and roads on condition that the Government made provision that no liquor should be allowed to he sold in that area. Such contract the Government is bound in honour to observe. This synod further urges that more effective measures be taken than have hitherto been used to secure the enforcement of the pledge that has repeatdly been given by the Government that the original agreement shall be maintained.”
A LOCAL PROTEST. At th© morning service at the Trinity Methodist, Church yesterday the pastor ftho Rev. H. E. Bellhousc) moved—“ That this congregation emphatically protests against the present movement to introduce licenses into the King Country in violation of the compact entered into by the Government in the past, and strongly urges Parliament to refuse any legislation permitting the granting of such licenses.” The motion was carried unanimously by the congregation standing.
