ROME, September 13. (Received Sept. 14, at 5.5 p.m.) A workman named Corvi fired three shots with a revolver at a tramcar, fatally wounding Deputy Casalini, Undersecretary of the Fascist Corporation. The whole of Italy is horror-stricken at the crime, which has still further increased the tension of the nation’s nerves. Oorvi, who is a carpenter, was formerly a porter at Deputy Casalini's villa. Signor Casalini, who was wpunded in the foreehad and temple, sank into a seat on the tramcar against his 14-year-old daughter and murmured: “They have killed me.” Oorvi threatened the conductor and passengers with his revolver and then tried to escape but was caught by passing carabiniers and soldiers, who had difficulty in protecting him from the crowd, who threatened to lynch him. Corvi, who appeared unbalanced and bordering on insanity, said he had killed Signor Casalini in order to avenge a brother in idealism—Deputy Matteotti. Signor Casalini was taken to a hospital, but he expired on the operating table. Cabinet is taking measures to ensure public order. The whole of the press and the Directory of the Fascist Party are exhorting the nation to exercise restraint. The poet Deputy, Signor Benelli, leader of the new Italic League, publishes an impassioned 'appeal to the whole nation to lay down arms and end the martyrdom, terror, and threats which are stifling the nation’s civilisation. Signor Casalini was a popular member of the Fascist Party. He leaves a •widow and five children. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
