DEFENCE DAY

AN AMERICAN INSTITUTION.

DEPRECATED BY THE CHURCHES

Presa Association—By Telegraph—Copyright,

WASHINGTON, September 12. (Received Sept. 14, at 5.5 p.m.) The world fliers were a feature ot the Defence Day celebrations to-day, passing over the National Capitol followed by another aeroplane containing officials, newspaper men and camera men. Throughout the country the day was celebrated by millions with parades, etc., the object being to keep alive citizenship and interest in defensive preparation in accordance with the recommendation of General Pershing, who will retire from active service to-night. Church organisations, as well as many Liberal and Socialistic societies, adopted resolutions deprecating the appointment of the day for such a celebration on the ground that it tended to foster a spirit of militarism. —Reuter.

SIXTEEN MILLION PARTICIPANTS. WASHINGTON, September 13. (Received Sept. 14, at 6.5 p.m.) The reports of the War Department indicate that more than 16,000,000 civilians participated in the Defence Day exercises throughout the country on Friday.— Reuter.
