NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. (Pbb United Brass Association.) OHRISTCHURCH, September 4. The New Zealand Hockey Association's shield tournament was continued at Lancaster Park to-day in fine weather. The following are the results : Canterbury A 1 defeated Canterbury B nil. Wellington 4 defeated Auckland 2. The tournament will be concluded on Saturday. LADIES' MATCHES. NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. (Pes United Phess Association.) NELSON, September 4. ■ Nelson is well maintaining its reputation as the city of sunshine, and the visiting hockey players have had nothing but clear skies and the absence of wind for matches so far, as a matter of fact, constant fine weather. There has been only nine wet days in the last 36, making the ground very hard for the players, and minor casualties are frequent occurrences. The matches were continued this afternoon. The following are the results:— B Section. Auckland 2 beat Manawatu 1. A Section. Nelson A 4 beat Wellington ?.. Wairarapa 2 beat Eastern nil. Poverty Bay 7 beat Marlborough nil. The Auekland-Manawatu match was extremely hard fought, the first spell ending 1 all. Both teams were severely tested on defensive tactics as the forwards in turn invaded the circle, exciting play eventuating. Manawatu lost several chances to even ut> the scores, and had the best of the second half. The Wellington team sustained its first defeat so far at the hands of Nelson after a rather uninteresting game, which Brightened wo somewhat in the second spell. Nelson scored early, and at half time led by 2 to 1. The second half was verv even, Nelson scoring two more and Wellington one. Poverty Bay had no difficulty in disposing of Marlborough, and should easily run out winners in the section, which is a much weaker one than Section B. The less experienced So-ith Islanders stuck to it gamely, but although within striking distance frequently the defence was altogether too good. At a meeting of the managers .of the teams last evening some alterations were made in the fixtures of the B Section. This afternoon Manawatu play Auckland instead of Monday afternoon. The Nelson B team has beon withdrawn in order not to prolong the tonrnapient, and in view of the possibility of an extra game to be plaved between Ruahine and Southland to find the section winner on Saburday, therefore Ruahine will play Buller instead of Nelson B, and the game with tl* B team a-gaist Southland. 'art down for Monday, is cancelled. Should Southland win the remaining games the semi-final with Ruahine will be played on Monday afternoon.
