The Otago team which is touring the Goldfields opened its tour to-day by defeating Tuapeka-Tapanui by the narrow margin of 13 points to 12. In the first spell Morrin and Shanks scored for the countrv team and Nicholson kicked a penalty goal, while Fox scored a try for Otago which Stevenson converted. In the second spell Kydd and Fox scored for Otago, Stevenson converting one of the tries; and Gordon scored for the country. Mr T. Waigth was referee. HIGH STREET SCHOOL r. MANIOTOTO. The first annual match between a combined Maniototo schools team and High Street School was played on the Caledonian Ground yesterday before a fair attendance. The game, which resulted in a draw, three points each, was a clever and interesting exhibition. The visitors, however, had, if anything, thet better of the game, and this was a creditable performance considering the fact that they had not played together_ before. From the kick-off High Street set the pace, but they comld not break the visitors’ defence. The bah wat being thrown about freely, with little or no result. After a break-away by the High Street backs a kick relieved, and Maniototo took play to the High Street line. From a. scrum in front of the posts Maniototo were awarded a free kick, but the attempt at goal failed. The strenuous effort*: of High Street to break through kept play in Maniototo’s territory for some time, and then a free kick gave them a chance: and Roberts succeeded in kicking a goal. Half-time came a few minutes later with Maniototo attacking. The second spell opened with Maniototo on the attack, and they had High Street defending repeated' rushes Play had centred in High Street’s twentyfive for a considerable time until White (Maniototo) secured and dashed over. The kick failed. With a few minutes to go. High Street livened up somewhat and took play to Maniototo’s twenty-five, but the visitors were equal to the occasion, and soon had High Street defending again. The game ended without further score: High Street 3 points Maniototo 3 points. Mr R. M'Kenzie was referee. WEST COAST TOUR. NEW ZEALAND UNION’S ACTION. (Pee United Press Assooiatiom.)
