NEW TYPE OF CATTLE
A O" . t.ITH BUFFALOES. XO WITHSTAND CANADIAN WINTERS. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. OTTAWA, August 24. (Received August 25, at 5.5 p.m.) A telegram from Edmonton says that queer cattle with hairy manes and double woolley coats will soon be grazing on die relatively barren tundra, a thousand miles north, according to Sir Robert Greig (Chairman of the Scottish Board of Agriculture) who predicted success for the dominion experiments in cross-breeding cows with buffalos when addressing the agricultural section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Generally, he said, the plough was 20 times as efficient as the animal in producing food on a given area, but animals could make available territory that was of little use for crops. “As soon as we get some buffalo blood into the cow, there will oe extensive live-stock development in the northern areas. The anatomy of the cow will bo altered to the extent of producing the long, fine coat of hair of game animals, so that the ice may freeze on the longer hairs without chilling the beast. The second object is to develop shaggy manes and heavy eyebrows so that the animal may turn into the wind without discomfort.”—Reuter.
