Shortage of labour in gold mines in New Zealand was referred to by Sir West by Perceval, chairman of tho Consolidated fJoldficlds (New Zealand) at the annual meeting of the company in London. “The labour position,” ho said, ‘‘is still causing us great anxiety, and is severely handicapping operations at tho mine. If only wo could obtain a full complement of mon it •would bo possible to got back to our prewar tonnage, and, as the capacity of tho plant is easily equal to such an increase, or from, say. 10,&C0 to 15,000 tons, the increase in profit would be proportionately larger, seeing that the overhead charges for the larger font;age would practically remain as at present. To meet the shortage every effort is being made both by the management in New Zealand and by ourselves over here. The position in New Zealartd recently has been slightly improving. Wo have sent a certain number of men from here with more or less satisfactory results, and arc continuing to engage and send out any men who appear quits salfcabW'
