GENERAL NEWS.

The W.E.A. Social Club held its monthly gathering on Saturday evening at the R.S.A. Club rooms. After an enjoyable proverbs competition Mr W. Slater, of the Ngapara District School, gave a short lecture on the educational use of the gramophone, illustrating from his own school work and by rendering actual records to those present, notably several lectures by Dr Walford Davies on the appreciation of music. After supper other records- showed the use of the gramophone in teaching French. The gathering closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the lenders of records and to the T.M.OA, for kindly allowing the use of its gramophone Air 0. Stuart Thomson (president) presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Mornington Literary Society on Monday evening, when a reading of the play “Ihe Importance of Being Earnest,” by Oscar Wilde, was given. The cast was as follows:—John Worthing, Mr S. Thomson; Algernon Moncrieff, Air R. Sinclair; Rev. Canon Cliasuable, Mr A. Al'Naughton; Lane and Merriniun, Air J. Edrnuiidson: Lady Bracknell, Mrs G. Aikman; Hon. Gwendolen Bracknell, Miss V. Cameron; Miss Cecily Cardew, Alias M. Anderson: Mass Prism, Miss N. Brown; Chorus, Miss J. Anderson. Mr Means expressed the pleasure the reading had afforded, and proposed a vote of thanks to the readers. At the monthly meeting of the NorthEast Valley School Committee Air J. Berdsley occupied the chair. Air Jones (ihe head master), in his report, stated that the school roll number was 650, and that the average attendance was good. Mr Allan, the first assistant, was off on sick leave, and Mr Caigon (of Masterton) was filling his place temporarily. Owing to the recent fine weather th© boys were able to use the new- playing area for football practice. In this connection Mr G. Alanson (convener of the Works Committee) reported having met Mr Rodger (architect of the Education Board) at (ho school, and they had gone over the ground together, and it bad been decided that, Air Tannock be asked to report on the most suitable method ot draining this playing area. The secretary reported haring interviewed Air Park, of the Education Board, regarding the alterations to the school, and said he bad been assured that these would be commenced as soon as the workmen were freed from the Port Chalmers School. The proceeds of an entertainment given at the school by Mr Tate realised £2 Is, and it was decided that this earn be devoted towards helping Mr Jones in commencing a school garden. Mr J. J. Bardsley reported iiaviiag visited the school and fount, everything going smoothly. The head master, he stated. was improving the school grounds by building a rockery in front of the infant school, and the school garden, in which the boys were taking a great interest, should be an aoquisifon to the school. Mr E. Hamilton Eagur attended the meeting at the request of the chairman, anil reported on the school band. He asked that the attention of parents be drawn to the band, and that they be asked to see that the boys in the hand practised, and (above all) looked after the music supplied tiicm-. It was decided that Airs APGregor. the janitress, be voted a bonus of £ls, as the allowance given by the Education Board at present was too small. The committee had supplemncled this allowance for the past 18 months. On Alonday evening, before a large audience ir the Watari Hall, Kaikorai, a most enjoyable concert was given in aid of the funds of the, Kaikorai Cricket Club. Cr J. J. Clark opened the proceedings with a short address. Hie programme wa= of a varied and interesting nature, and « items were contributed by the Coluraba College girls, Air F. C. Cooper, Miss Nana Newey Mrs Morison M Donald, Mr A. Spiers,’ Air J. Clark, Mr J. Paterson. Mist Jessie Rawlinson. Miss Tory Jefferson, and Mr Sidney Taylor. An Irish reel and a Highland reel wore danced by Aliss Lorm Budge Doreen O'Sullivan, Maggie Gall, and Ilona Beale, while a pianoforte duel was played by Misses Alaisie APDonald and Alice Wilson. Mrs A. Newey proved an efficient accompanist. At the termination of the concert the president of the dub (Air Chas. Beeby, sen.) thanked the performers for their assistance.
