ONYX WINS AUGUST HANDICAP. (Fbom Ottb Special Übpobteb.) CniUSTCHUKGH. August 11. The Metropolitan trotting meeting opened in tine "weather, and there was a large attendance. The track was a bit stioky at the opening, hut improved considerably after the fourth race. During the day £42,634 wont through the totalisator, as against £44,758 last year, when the meeting opened on a Saturday. The Dunedin horse Money Spider was made favourite for tho Introductory Handicap, but he did not begin well and never looked dangerous. Another Danedmowned runner in Marvin Drift waa too far hack in the handicap to have a chpnce. Queen Ida went well for about a. circuit and then broke up. Nelson Bell also put in several mixes but at tho finish kept down and had suffWient speed to beat Bmewood by a good two lengths. Pieter innmcnrian appeared to have a chance as they camo to the borne turn, but he ImaJlv could not do bettor than a fa.r third. Wady Embrace, Copa do Ora .tumor, arot Coronal did not getr going at tho start ot the Electric Handicap. After going a mile Loganwood arid Snowshoo dosed on. the leader, Snowshoo had covered a good deal of ground and was hanging hadlv. Snowshoe went out to the front and looked at over a winner when leading Loganwood down the back, but Onyx got a lucky run through on tho rails ann ran into third place fmowshoo was still well clear turning for home, but Dnyx got on terms with him 60 yards from the post and won nicely by half a. lcngl.il. Loganwood ran a good raco for about a mile and three-quart era, but found the journey too far, and after pacing brilliantly in the first mde and a-hatl Childe Pointer also dropped away. Ivy Audubon got a good run in the I rial Handicap, and soon joined Golden uiin in the lead. Mcnembcr began badly and was soon out of it. Golden Sun and Ivy Audubon led until reaching the home turn ami then dropped away, whilst Colchester, who v;as third into tho straight, got up and beat Prince Switbin by half a length. Damahine was third just in front of Becky Logan. Stunt Artist and Harcwood were next, boil Harold was fairly well up three furlongs from homo, but did not finish on. _ Farzan fell shortly after the start and Quiver was pulled up. Talaro. who was favourite with Prince Swithin, failed to get anywhere near the front after the start. Ladv Irving, Mnngoutu, and Peter Swift broke up at (he start of the Stewards’ Handicap. Laokie \Vood was leading Marietta and Speculator four furlongs from home when the first-named broke up, and Speculator followed suit. Marietta went on and finally won by three lengths from Peter Swift, who got, up and beat St. Anthony by two lengths for second place. Tiny Moon, Laekie Wood, and Speculator wore next. Le Todd was never dangerous. Dolly Dillon supplanted Silver Shoo before going three furlongs m the Queen Mary Handicap, and Hayseed broke a hobble early in the race. Dolly Dillon, Harry Audubon, and Logan Lou were showing tho way down tho back for tho last time, and Koval Oak dropped away. Once in tho straight Horry Audubon came on and won comfortably by three lengths from Dolly Dillon, who just heat Logan Lou. Hypo was next well clear of the others. Droamalton was made a pronounced favourite for tho Selwyn Handicap, and lakimr charge after going six furlongs ho finally stalled off Lincoln Huo n and won by over a length. Harbour Light was another length awav, about 100 yards in front of Fashion Queen. Countryman broke up several times during the race. CHRISTCHURCH, August 1L At a meeting of tho Board of tho New Zealand Trotting Association to-night a letter was received from tho Director of tho Live Slock Division of tho Department of Agriculture, acknowledging receipt of tho association’s letter of July 29, in which it was stated that the association was desirous of registering the brand “ N.Z. ” for the purpose cf branding all trotting horses throughout New Zealand. After quoting the provisions of the Stock Act dealing with the question, tho Director said he regretted that, while in sympathy l with tho principle behind tho application, he could not agree to tho registration of Iho firo brand “ N.Z.,” but if the association thought it would bo of any assistance in (he objects desired to brand each borso with the letters " N-Z.” on tho hoof no objection would be offered to this, and the association could then, perhaps, insist on the owners having a registered brand which they would apply, and supply the association with a copy of it for identification purposes in conjunction with the letters “ N.Z.” on the hoof.
