WAIPIATA SANATORIUM.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly mooting of tho Waipiala Sanatorium Committee was hold at W-aipiata on Wednesday evening, and attended by Messrs J. Matheson (chairman), the Hon. K. Scott, tho Hon. A. S. Malcolm', J. Ritchie, S. Fovvle, G. Hash, and A, Horsey, Hr Crawshaw (Medical Officer of Health, Hunedin) and Inspector Cameron, of the Health Department, were also present. ■The Waitaki Hoard notified the committee that Mr A. Fraser, its chairman, hod been appointed its representative on tho commit* too in place of Mr H. A. Dovey (deceased). Tho Chairman welcomed Mr A. Horsey, of Ashburton, Mr G. Dash, of South Canterbury, and Dr Crawshaw to tho meeting. Tire Secretary was directed to forvvard a letter ot congratulation to Dr T. M'Kibbin, late Medical Officer of Health, Otago, on his promition to the head office, Wollington, and appreciation of the valuable services he had rendered to tho committee during the past two yeat«. The Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister of Marine) advised that a complete set of meteorological instruments fox the use of the sanatorium would be forwarded as soon as they arrived in tho dominion. Mr A. P. Aldridge, consulting .engineer, advised that tenders for the supply of the necessary equipment were being invited throughout tne dominion. The tenders would close on September 17. —Tho chairman and secretary were authorised to open tne tenders and submit them to Mr Aldridge for report at tho first meeting following that date. . , lu connection with the pipe lino and power-house site fox this scheme, the matter of arranging for tho line was left in the hands of Messrs Ritchie and Scott and tho secretary to arrange with the adjoining landowner. The question of resuming a portion of uio committee's farm, at present leased to Mr T. J. Samuel, was left in the hands of Messrs Scott and Ritchie to arrange, the committee feeling that it was now necessary that it should have more land for maintaining its milking herd. in connection with the Government grant of £SOOO towards capital expenditure, it was decided -on the motion of Messrs. Malcolm and Dash that the department be advised that the committee had decided to xirocecd with its original building scheme, and to undertake at once tho erection of a pavilion for male patients. This was considered necessary and advisable trod the tact that tho old wooden shelters were not. at all satisfactory or comfortable, and by utilising tho services of the present contractor, staff, and plant, the building could be erected considerably cheaper than it would be later on With, that end in view, tho committee proposed to utilise the Government's £SUIW ymut towards tiio financing of tbe ueW oavilion, leaving tho balance to bo provided for in next year’s estimates. The present contractor had already submitted a price tor the erection of this pavilion, which was similar to the female one now nearing completion, and tho architect reported that the price- was a very reasonable one, and considerably leas than it would be were some other contractor to undertake the work later ° U it wa s also decided, on tho recommendation of the Medical Superintendent, that the architect and Dr Kidd submit tracing and estimates lor convortmg tho present concrete building erected by Dr Byres into administrative block, consisting of doctor's office, laboratory, dispensary, and tho other portion os living quarters fox the matron. It was also decided that Dr Kidd asked to submit an estimate of cost for the necessary laboratory equipment. The question of further treo-planting during tho present favourable season was left in the hands of tho Hon. R. Scott, with power to act. The Medical Superintendent reported that there wore 17 patients in the institution, also that the rainfall for July had boon somewhat heavier than usual. The report was adopted. Tho matter of furnishings for the female pavilioA was left in tho hands of tho chairman and secretary, with power to act. Certain recommendations made by tho Medicai [Superintendent regarding tho covering of the floors in the diflerent bathroom and lavatory blocks with Kama were approved, the architect to bo instructed accordingly. Une Ireeh application from tho Waitaki Board for the admission of a patient was referred to the Medical Superintendent for report. The Treasurer submitted report of the receipts and payments for the month, showing a credit balance at date of £0573 His Gd. He also submitted tho annual returns, income and expenditure, balance sheet, etc.,’ of the institution .for tho year ended March 31, 1924, as submitted to tho department, which were approved, copies to bo forwarded to each of the associated boards. Accounts and salaries totalling £3587 17s 4d were passed for payment. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the committee at Dunedin on Tuesday, August 26.
