ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

FIRST GRADE. MAORI HILL v. SOUTHERN. This match was played on the Clear, and the home team, winning by 5 goals to 4, avenged their defeat in the first round. ’The ground was very wet. and the slippery surface was against clover footwork. A fair number of spectators witnessed tho game, which proved full of interest and exciting in the second spell, when no fewer than eight goals out of nine wore scored. Both learns played short, Donaldson and Davis being absentees from the Southern and M'Corrnick (owing to illness) and Kennedy from the Maori Hill Maori Hill, with tho wind slightly in their favour, were the first to be dangerous, Walker having a shot which M‘Ken»i“ (Southern’s goalie) cleared. Anderson md Italic, with combined "lay, continued the attack, which Trevathan saved at the expense of a resultlcss corner. Enlchin, Southern’s right half, opened up play for his forwards, Thompson swinging the ball across to Jones, ’whose shot was cleared by Currie. Fraser relieved a further advance by the Rcd-and-Blacks, and Balk set his forwards going, Walker spoiling by offside play. Although play travelled from end to end it was ragged. Southern spoilt their play by bunching, but nevertheless shot for goal more often than their opponents Currie saved several likely shots trorn Donnelly and Jones. Trevathan was solid in defence for Southern, and the best Maori Hill could do was to force several corners. M'Kenzie, in goal, made a fine save from one of tho corner kicks. Balk went through on his own, but his centre was too high and fast for Walker to get to, and Graham, on the right wing, centred back to Balk, who shot high. Southern resumed the attack, a weak shot by Donnelly being cleared by Currie, and a couple of corner kicks were also of no avail. Good play amongst the Hill forwards forced a corner, and Trevathan was penalised for jumping. Balk look the penalty kick, and placed through, but the kick was recalled, and his second shot also found the net. Half-time was called immediately after, with Maori Hill in the lead, I—o.

Changing over. Turner came on for Maori Hill, who sprang a surprise by their forward line breaking through from the kick off. Balk was stopped by Trevathan, but Walker quickly sent the ball out to Graham, whose centre was placed through by Anderson. Maori Hill 2, Southern 0. Donnelly put Southern on the attack. Jones, who had taken up the outside right position, carried play well down, but shot wildly. Thompson and Jones, by good work, again iiad Southern attacking. M'Donald conceded a corner in saving, and Hill placed through for Southern from the kick across. Maori Hill 2, Southern 1. A spell of even play followed, Morris being prominent for the Hill and M’Evoy for Southern. From a free kick Morris had a shot which brought M'Kcnzie to his knees to save. An exciting tussle ensued in Southern’s goal, a corner kick resulting, and from the kick Balk struck tlm upright with the ball, which rebounded Into the net. Maori Hill 3, Southern 1. Kicking off. Southern, lighting gamely, pressed the nill, and Fraser was penalised for hands in the penalty area. Batch in’s kick gave Currie, in goal, no chance. Maori Hill 3, Southern 2. The players were now fully extended, and play was exciting. Walker made a nice opening for Balk, whoso shot M’Kenzie stopped. Walker received from the rebound, but shot over. From a Maori Hill throw-in Balchin cleared, the ball going to Morris, who returned to 1 timer, on the left, and this player, heating the defence, sent across to Balk, who scored. Maori Hill 4, Southern 2. Southern continued to fight gamely, and M’Farlane, Maori Hill’s right half, when hard pressed, handled m the penalty area. Balchin’s Kick was stopped by Currie, but Jones obtained from the clearance and netted. Maori Hill 4, Southern 3. Play continued full of interest. Walker essayed a shot which the Southern goalie cleared, and Hudson put in a long shot. Currie held the ball safely, but was penalised for ’’steps,'’ and, following the free kick, Jones again scored, making the total 4 all. Hard play, which was keenly conlesed, followed, vinon Hill playing together better than Southern, and having a slight advantage. M’Kenzie saved a shot from Turner, also a fine header by Walker. Morris stemmed a Southern attack, and Maori Hill, amidst great excitement, hung round their opponent's goal, forcing three corner kicks in succession, which were resultless. Maori Hill returned to the attack, Morris placing to Walker. The latter sent the Dill across Southern’s goal, and Turner scored with a fast shot which M’Kenz.ie just failed_ to get to, giving the home team the lead just on time. Mr W. P. Smith was refree. Maori Hill - ... 5 goals. Southern 4 goals. MOR NIXGTON v. SEACLIFF. This match was played at Seaclitf on Saturday,' and resulted in a decisive win for the home team by seven goals to nil. Mornington won the toss, and Seacliif kicked oil,- and immediately launched a strong attack on the visitors’ goal, a good shot by Simmons forcing a comer, which Burns smartly headed in, thus opening the score for the home team. Seaclitf 1, Mornington nil. On resuming tho offensive was again with Seaclitf, and Hanlin, on the left, centring a good cross from Simmons, enabled Hooper to register a second goal within ten minutes from the start of play. Seaclitf 2, Morningtnn nil. Seaclitf still kept the play close to the Mornlngton line, a combined attack by M’Dougall and Simmons being well cleared by Dickel, and M’Gregor and Eeitch look tho play for a moment into Seacliff’s territory, but the hall was quickly returned, and good play down the centre enabled Hooper to again find the net. Seaclitf 3, Mornington nil. Seaclitf were now showing rare combination. and largely dominated the play, despite every effort of tho visitors, among whom Catto, Dixon, and L. Johnson were conspicuous to break away, and tho Mornin "ton hack division wore kept busy repelling repeated attacks, until Burns managed to get through. Seaclitf 4, Monilngton nil. Tho pressure by tho home team still continued, and two further goals followed in quick succession, both to Hoopers’ account. this player accepting nice passes by Hanlin and Simmons respectively. Seaclitf 6, Mornington nil. Mornington now made a' big effort to score, and Catto and Dixon took the ball close to the Seaclitf goal, and a penalty kick against Seaclitf looked dangerous, but tho opportunity was missed, and half-time was called shortly after. The second spell was marked by rather more even play, for although the home team still held the upper hand the visitors did 'not lope heart, Dickel maintaining a • tubborn defence in the back line, while L. Johnson. Catto, and Dixon, with Hall, who bail moved np from goal, among the forwards, making strong efforts to score. Seaclitf. however, by fine play, in which good combination was evident, still continued to keep their opponents busy. The forward lino was very active in attack, and Fenner added a further goal before the whistle brought the game to an end. Mr Fogarty was referee. Kcsult: Seaclitf 7 goals. Mornington Kil. OLD BOYS v. TAIFIRI. This match was played at Mosgicl under good weather conditions, but tho long grass end greasy bill miliated against a very clever exposition of the code. Old Boys, who were strengthened by the inclusion of Race at centre-half and Allan at full-back, were too good for the country team, which included several new faces. Losing the toss. Taicri at once sot np an attack, but were repelled by the opposing hacks. Latimer made a good run on tho right, but Hanlin in goal for Taicri made a good save from tho resulting shot. Taieri’s centre forward, an old hand at tho game, made a shrewd opening for M’Lenn. who beat Caskie with a soft shot, the Old Boys’ full-backs blanketing Caskie. Taicri 1. Old Boys nil. Old Boys nt once set np a hot attack, and Douglas, by good play on tho left, drew (ho defence, and enabled Duncan,' by fast following up, to beat Hanlin and even the scores. Keeping up the attack Old Boys pepnered (he Taicri "oal. but Hanlin was equal to (bo occasion. M’C'loy set Walker away on Taiori’s left, but linrie repelled the- attack. Latimer took the ball down and passed to M’lMullan. who from close in cave Hanlin no chance. Old Boys 2, Taicri 1. Changing round. Race set his forwards in morion, and Duncan beat Hanlin with a scorcher. The Taicri defence was now sorely tried, but Dey and his colleague at full-back and M’Cloy nt centre-half worked imrd and staved off many attacks. At length Bardsley, who was playing p solid game for Old Boys, transferred to Fraser, who o-nve Duncan another onnortunit v to boat Hanlin. Old Boys 4. Taicri 1. Allan was a stumbling block for the Taioi’ forwards, and Caskie in goal having very little.

Taicri made another sortie, and the closing incident in a clean game was Casino saving a high lobbing shot from Walker. Mr Moorhouso was referee. Result: Old Boys ... ._ 6 goals. Taieri 1 goal. NORTHERN v. K AIT AN GAT A.

Northern travelled with a Tull team for their match with Kaitangata, and on the run of the play deserved iheir win. Losing the toss, Northern kicked off and took pla.y to their opponents’ end, but good defence by the Kaitangata backs relieved. Play for a while was very even, neither side gaining any appreciable advantage. Following a throw-in J. Dryden secured just inside halfway’, and after beating an opponent transferred to Cherry, who sent on to Ruddiman. enabling the latter to score with a good shot. Northern 1, Kaitangata 0. Play continued quiet for a time. R.ttddiman essayed a shot, which just missed. The local team now held the play, and set up a senes of attacks on the visitors’ goal. Campbell, with only the goalkeeper to beat, sent tho ball in fern ham's arms Their efforts were rewarded shortly after, however, a fine centre by tho right wing enabling Prescott to equalise tho scares. Half-time was whistled shortly afterwards.

Resuming Jones. Northern’s right wing, changed places with Coates, tun., at right liali. The play continued oven with Northern showing better football,, although Kaitangata’s robust methods kept the black and whites in check. Good play by Macklo and Ruddiman looked dangerous for Kaitangata. but only a corner kick resulted. J. Dryden, Doig, and the backs, stemmed a Kaitangata advance and Northern made strenuous efforts for the deciding goal. Howie, at centre half for tho home team, together with the two hades, were a stumbling block, however, and a drawn gamo seemed apparent. However, a long shot by boig wos deflected into the goal bv Ruddiman, the goal-keeper fumbling tho clearance. and Cherry coming in fast, put the bail inio the net, just before the whistle blew for time.
