SUPPLY OF TEACHERS.
SHORTAGE IN COUNTRY SCHOOLS. EX-STUDENTS’ PREFERENCE FOR TOWNS. fPEB United Press Association.) NAPIER, June 20. Referring to-clay to the shortage of qualified teachers for schools out of the main centres, the secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board (Mr W. L. Dunn) stated: 'T believe that in some of the training college centres there arc ex-students without positions, as they will not accept positions away from town. It does not seem unreasonable, in view of the largo amount spent by the department on the training of students, to require as a condition of their training college bonds that they should take a few years’ work in country positions. The new teachers’ salaries scale is, however, responsible for the lowering ui salaries for certain assistantships in country schools, so that the same inducements are not held out to young teachers io accept country assistantships. When the new scheme was submitted for consideration tlie Hawke’s Bay Board pointed out that difficulty would probably arise through the lowering of the value of positions, and experience has fully proved the board’s view to have been correct. A conference between representatives of the department, the New Zealand Educational Institute, and secretaries of boards will bo hold early next month to consider the whole question of teachers’ salaries. I intend to »tress strongly the need of some increase in the salaries of country assistants.”
