AMERICAN POLITICS

PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN. THE PROSPECTS DISCUSSED. Presa Association—By Telegraph.—Copyright. WASHINGTON, May 25. (Received May 26, at 8 p.m.) Of 1098 delegates to the Democratic National Convention on June 24 at NewYork, 896 have already been elected, of widen number 207 are pledged to vote for Mr M'Adoo as Presidential nominee, 123. for Governor Smith, of New York, and 24 for Senator Underwood, while 442 are not pledged. There remain 202 delegates yet to bo chosen. A majority of two-thirds is required to select a candidate. Thus, while Mr Coolidge is certain to be the Republican choice, the Democratic choice remains extremely uncertain, and owing to the large number of unpledged delegates it is believed that a so-called "dark horse" or compromise aspirant may secure the nomination, the more prominent candidates probably being deserted after the early balloting. The fight for a more liberal prohibition law and the anti-Ku-Klux Kum planks will, it is believed, engender extreme bitterness, as a result of which Messrs Smith, M'Adoo, and Underwood are likely to suffer elimination. The National League of Women Voters has announced a request to both the Republican and Democratic parties to include planks in their platform for American participation in the World Court, the prompt enactment of Federal laws for the protection of children in industry, the removal of legal discrimination against women, and support for the merit system as the basis of appointment to public office and promotions.—A. and JN.Zj. Cable.
