AMERICAN SCANDALS
ANOTHER PHASE REVEALED. CORRUPTION IN lEDERAL PRINTING OFFICE. Presa Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, NEW YORK, May 24. Atlantic City reports another remarkable revelation of Governmental corruption. It was made by Mr George Carter, head of the Federal 'Printing Office, who has Issued a carefully prepared statement of 26 typewritten pages outlining details of graft, wholesale race-track gambling, and bootlegging, which' flourished unrestrained among the 4000 employees in the Printing Office, leading to the expulsion of 268 employees, including the JUeputypublic Printer and the chief clerk. One foreman, a trusted messenger between the office and the Capitol, was discovered to be bootlegging for members of Congress. Even boy apprentices were buyers and consumers of illicit liquor. riace-track gambling became of greater concern than work, and many •women employees were being kept constantly penniless by almost daily losses. Mr Carter's most amazing charges dealt with the existence'of an oath-bound ring within the Printing Office, which dominated the policies and personnel. People from whom it sought favour were favoured and those it desired to be removed were removed. Mr Carter was appointed by Mr Harding. The Government Printing Offices annual business totals 12,000,000 dollars. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
