NEW ZEALAND MEAT.
THE HOME MARKET. PRESENT POSITION UNSATISFACTORY. (Pee United Peess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 14. Mr David Jones (chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board) left for Wellington to-night en route for England. Mr Jones, in an interview, said that the board was spending about £4OOO on its meat exhibits in the British Empire Exhibition and other displays of prime meat in London. The meat had been carefully selected, and the display would be a credit to the dominion and a profitable advertisement. Mr Jones stated that the present freight arrangements terminated in October, and arrangements would require to be made for the future. Asked what he thought of the present position of the meat market and the downward trend of prices, Mr Jones said that the present position was unsatisfactory. Statistically, the position was much better than last year, but to-day they had far too many sellers of New Zealand meat and 100 many weak holders, and this wjis “bearing” the market, “Will the board take any action?” ha was asked.
“The board must take into consideration,’* he replied, “the probable effect of this on next year’s prices. This I shall be in a better position to estimate on the spot, but the board will not hesitate to exercise the very wide powers it posssesßes; if such action is cleamed necessary.”
