MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION.

The monthly meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association was held last night. The president (Mr 11. Cuddle) occupied the chair.

A letter was received from the. Industrial Corporation of Mew Zealand staling that the Union Steam Ship Company proposed to run the Sussex direct from New Zealand to Singapore and Java. There would be three sailings annually, and the freight rates would bo the same as those from the principal Australian ports. No subsidy was involved, and there would bo no interference with the existing preferential duties. The assistance of the various Manufacturers’ Associations was solicited to enable cargo to be found for the vessel. The Chairman said that tne Royal i’acket Mail Company also proposed to open a service between Java and New Zealand.

Mr Hayward said (hut the one service was the outcome of the other. The Secretary said that the Cnion Steam Ship Company quoted a flat rate from the tour New Zealand ports. It was decided to set up a sub-committee consisting of the president and Messrs 11. F. Slinccek, C. Wilson, and J. Hogg to go into the question of providing cargo from Otago for the vessel. The Secretary reported that Mr H. R. Spence, secretary of the Now Zealand and South Seas Exhibition Company, had received a communication from the Industrial Corporation of Now Zealand stating that the question of a block area at the Exhibition for New Zealand manufacturers had been referred to the affiliated associations and that it, would bo considered at the annual conference, to be held next June.— It was resolved that the association strongly advises the directors of the Exhibition to set aside a court for the display of New Zealand manufactures and products, and that the association gives the directors an assurance of its strong support. The Industrial Corporation of New Zealand wrote stating that the Dunedin Association would bo advised of the date of the annual conference of representatives of the affiliated associations.—The Chairman stated that it was too early yet to decide whether the Dunedin Association would ho represented at the conference, but ho thought that a representative from Dunedin should be present, notwithstanding that the local association had now cancelled its affiliation and that its delegate would really have no status.
