Mr Tex Rickard has guaranteed Quintin Romer Rojas, a Chilean heavy-weight, 100,000 dollars for a title fight with Dempsey, possibly in September, if he succeeds in disposing of three preliminary opponents. The Chilean® first bout, which ia to be staged in New York, will be against Fred Fulton or Floyd Johnson. No elimination will be considered between Firpo and Rojas. Cable. Wellington’' rugby - union. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 27. The local Rugby Union, in its annual report, urges the restriction of representative fixtures this season, and that none should be undertaken till the club championships are finished. The sum of £6OO has been set aside towards a fund for rebuilding the grand stand which is urgently needed. Owing to the wet winter the revenue was considerably affected. A new ground of 13J acres, with four playing areas, was secured at Lower Hutt, but th© other grounds offered were much too costly. The committee strongly approved of the proposals lor the selection cf the All Black team. EASY MONEY FOR THE EXHIBITION. TO THR EDITOR Sia, —I-have only been in Dunedin a few months, and it is incomprehensible to me that there should be any possibility of a lack °f funds for a proposition such as that of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition. Wherever an exhibition worthy of the nans© has been held it has always attracted a large influx of people to its venue, and this means £ s d to everybody in the fortunate environment. As the members of the Government do not appear to be falling over one another to provide a subsidy for the Exhibition, I would suggest that a giant art muon should be held, and if tor pothing else than to save its face, I should think the Cabinet would give a permit. I am sure the following scheme, if carried out, wcnld raise the necessary funds: Let the art union consist of 100,009 ticket® at 10s east, which would raise £30,000. Of this let the Exhibition authorities receive £30,v00, the amount, I think, it is urgently requiring, and let the other £20,000 be distributed in prizes, say, as follows:—First prizes, £7000; second prize, £3OOO ; 20 prizes of JEXGO, £2000; 40 prizes of £SO, £2OOO ; 50 prizes of £3O, £ISOO ; 80 prizes £2O, £1600; 100 prizes of £lO. £IOOO ; 360 prizes of £5, £I9OO. There would be no need to stop at 100,000 tickets; let the prizes be pro rata, and if extra inducements are required, which I think would not be the case, allow each purchaser of a ticket to receive so many admissions to the Exhibition Of course, some lily-white people would say, “I can’t buy tickets in such an art union. It is a gamble, and if I won a prize it would sear by conscience.” To such I would respectfully suggest that they draw prizes they should either pay the money into the Exhibition coffers or give it to some deserving object, such as the Salvation Army. This would salve their qualms. I simply put this scheme forward as a suggestion;—it is only rough, but some abler mathematician than Pmay be able to devolve a workable project from it. —I am, etc., G. B, Dunedin, February 27.
