LAKE LOGAN AND THE SCHOOL SITE.
TO THE. BDITOB. Sir,- -It is regrettable that, in the deliberations of tile various bodies with regard to the disposal of the Lake Logan site, the interests of the general body ot citizens were not more fully considered. There is no question that from a citizens’ point of view file whole of Lake Logan should be a reserve and no part should be alienated as a building site. To hand over eight acres to the Education Board with a frontage to Union street means that for all time those who desire to gain access to the reserve will have to pass along one side of those eight acres. It means a considerable additional distance to walk betoro getting on to the sports ground. Then again, since the front of the education buildings is to face north, the back of the buildings will be directed towards Union street, and the result must be at least inartistic. Quite apart from these considerations, as Dunedin increases in size the whole reserve will not be a bit too large for recreation purposes without the deduction of eight acres. , When the railway deviation is complete an excellent site for education purposes will be available on the other side of Union street. The buildings could then face north, have an imposing frontage to Union street, and overlook the whole Lake Logan reserve. I understand that the Amenities Society made an offer to the Education Board to plant this site with shelter belts of trees if the board would accept it in nlace of the Lake Logan site. The offer was curtly declined. The ratepayers have their remedy. They can : (1) Refuse to sanction the expenditure of large sums of money in providing approaches to Lake Logan unless the whole area is made a reserve for recreation purposes. (2) Do their best to secure representation on the Education Board so that a policy may be adopted more in accordance with the wishes of the citizens. Ag a ratepayer I shall vote against any expenditure of money in providing approaches 'to Lake Logan unless the whole area is made a recreation reserve.-—I am, etc., F. R. Riley. P.S. —This letter was written, I may add, before I read your article in Saturday’s issue on the same subject.—F.R.R.
