NEW ZEALAND EGGS IN LONDON. UNLIMITED MARKET FOR QUALITY. Writing from London, Mr J■ B. Merrett, who took th© shipment of eggs in the Conntbic, has some interesting things to Bay on the prospect of New Zealand eggs_ on the Lcndon market. He states that the temperature of the chilling chamber, in which the eggs were carried did not vary more than two degrees during the six weeks pas ease to London. While unloading he waa present at the Albert Docks, and succeeded in landing th© eggs in London stores with only two eggs broken out of th© 547,680 taken in the shipment. Th© results surprised the London buyers as on two previous shipments no less than 40 per cent, in on© and 27 per cent, in the other were broken in transit. Tbe result of the splendid order in which the eggs arrived is attributed to the personal supervision given the shipment. On arrival at London the eggs were transferred to barges and towed 8 miles up the Thames to Hay’s wharves, where they were placed in store. The quality of the eggs was excellent, and a revelation to London buyers. An examination of the stocks arrived in London for the week showed that th© quality of the eergs from the different countries was very poor. Most of the eggs showed stateness, and had evidently been kept for several weeks. The New Zealand shipment arrived when the egg market was well supplied, ani the demand, owing to high retail prices, was very poor. One 'large buyer declared the Now Zealand eggs to be the best on the market with th© exception of English new laid?. Mr Merrett succeeded in making sates from 2s 2d to 2s 5d per dozen, and hopes to do better with the second shipment, which left in the Rotorua. He has also cabled for :a third shipment vo airive in January. He states that there is an unlimited demand in London, but a gmat deal of preliminary work has to be doffe to rntroduce New Zealand eggs, and he hopes in a tew months to make arrangements to place all the surplus eggs New Zealand ©an supply. As far as auality is concerned, the shipment under his care is declared by London buyers to be the best of anv shipment sent from Australasia. Mr Merrett states that prices can be improved with greater care of grading. Egg shells must be cleaner and the grade kept uniform. The temperature at which the egg's were carried was lower than any previous shipment that had been sent either from New Zealand or Australia, and to this he attributes the superior quality of the eggs. One buyer who selected 200 dozen for trial repeated his order by taking 6000 dozen. Mr Mcrrett’s investigations into the egg pulp market were net sufficiently advanced at the time of writing to give a report. The pulp he took arrived in splendid condition, and the tests showed it to be of the highest quality. LONDON WOOL SALES.
