RACING PERMITS.

LAKE COUNTY’S PROTEST. THE MINISTER’S REPLY. (Fbom Oub Own Cobbespondent.) INVERCARGILL, January 10. Mr P. A. do )a Perrelle, member for Awarua, received the following letter from the Hon. F. Bollard (Minister of Internal Affairs): —‘T have to acknowledge receipt of your further telegram of January 4, emphatically protesting against my action in allocating the Lake County racing permits to the Franklin and Matamata Racing Clubs, and asking mo to reconsider my decision. I regret I cannot see my way to alter my decision. Before deciding the question as to the disposal of the Lake County permits I gave full consideration to the recommendations of the Dunedin District Committee that two days be allotted to the Riverton Racing Club. The position was, however, that the Dunedin Racing District had already five days’ racing in excess of its quota, whereas the Auckland Racing District had 27 days less than its quota. In these circumstances I could not agree to the Dunedin District Committee’s recommendation. The two days have not been permanently taken away from your district, but have been allotted to the Franklin and Matamata Racing Club for one year only.”
