The Westland goldfields diamond jubilee celebrations were commenced to-day in glorious weather. The opening ceremony consisted of the pioneers’ reunion and luncheon in the exhibition buildings. The town and district observed a holiday. Largo crowds of visitors arrived by all the trains and the town was en fete. The Hon. G. J. Anderson represented the Government, and in the course of his address referred to the great colonisation work of the pioneers of the goldfields. He paid a tribute to the late Mr Richard John Seddou as one to whom New Zealand still owed a great debt. Mr Anderson expressed _ pleasure at such a largo gathering of pioneers whom the country could not do too much for. He also congratulated the Exhibition Executive on its splendid display, and wished it every success. Otlwr speakers, including Messrs James O’Brien, M.P., R. A. Wright (Mayor of Wellington), and the Hons. H. L. Michel and J. Grimmond responded on behalf of the pioneers. Subsequently the pioneers were entertained at luncheon at the Town Hall, upwards of 400 pioneers being present. The entertainment of the pioneers will be continued for the remainder of the week. Various outdoor functions have been arranged.
