OBITUARY

MR E. W. KANE. (Fbom Ode Own Cohhespondknt.) WELLINGTON, December 10. Oho of the best-known Bank of New Zealand officials, Mr R. W. Kane, died liero on Saturday at the age of 74. His father, Mr Richard Kane, was one of the early immigrants, and his son was bom in Auckland in 1349. Later the family removed to Wellington,' and Mr R. W. Kano was educated here. After serving the bank for 49 years the lute Mr Kane was appointed one of the directors, which position lie held for nine years. lie was regarded as a sound adviser on banking and finance generally. He served under Mr A. Kennedy, the first general manager of the bank, and every subsequent general manager until his retirement in 1913. After his first- eight years’ service Mr Kane went to Christchurch, and in 1874 was appointed accountant at Oamaru, returning to Wellington as accountant two years later and remaining here till 1884, After relieving as manager at Invercargill for a year he went to Australia, and served for 14 years as manager at Newcastle and Adelaide. In 1898 he returned to Oamaru, and in 1900 was appointed manager at Wellington. In January. 1913, he was appointed North Island inspector. A year after his retirement he was appointed by . the Government as director of the bank. In 1919 he was appointed financial adviser to the Public Trust Office. In early life Mr Kane took a keen interest in outdoor sports, and was for seven years a member of the “D” Battery, Wellington. He was for many years a member of the Thorndon Bowling Club, of which ho was elected president in 1911-12. The late Mr Kane is survived by a widow and two daughters —Miss M. Kano and Miss Amy Kane, of Wellington, and a brother. Mr E. W. Kano, Clerk of the House of Representatives. Another brother, who rose to a responsible position in the P. and O. service, lost his life in the sinking of one of the company’s ships during the war. The late Mr Kane’s only son was killed in the war at Passchendaele in October, 1917.
