COW IN COURT.
AMUSING INCIDENT IN COUNTRY TOWN. (Feou Odb Own Coebespondekt.j SYDNEY, November 29. Cows are not bo foolish as the vacuity ol their bovine faces might suggest. At the Grafton Quarter Sessions the case of the alleged theft •of a cow was being heard before Judge Mbcatta. A police sergeant: was in the witness box, and the appearance of the cow was being discussed, when a strange' ’head peered into the court room. The old brindle cow, which had been grazing in the courtyard, had walked along the corridor, and poked its-head through the main door. The little country court figuratively rooked with laughter. The cow had apparently looked in to settle itself all argument as to its appearance. “Good gracious,” said the Crown Prosecutor, “why, here she is.” Judge Mocatta could not allow the occasion to pass without a little witticism. " 1 hope,” he said, “that this is not intended to ‘cow-er’ the jury.” But the Crown Prosecutor was not to be outdone. He worked off a little pun. “I did not call the cow,” he protested. “Perhaps she wants to bully tire jury." Finally, a couple of policemen escorted the cow back to the grassy patch at the rear of the court, thfpugh the 40ft of corridor whence she had tramped to fee, it might seem, how the case was going. This sudden revolutionising of a dignified prosaic court into a place of uncontrollable mirth might also be said to be “a cow d’ etat.” '
