MILKING SHORTHORN BREEDERS.

HALF-YEARLY MEETING. Tho half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Breeders’ Association was held at Palmerston North on October 31, when ’ the president (Mr J. M. Ranstead) presided -over a fair attendance of delegates. A letter was received from the Department of Agriculture forwarding a resolution passed by the conference, asking for a revocation of the system of charging reduced income tax on interest derived from loans on local bodies and company debentures, as compared with the interest derived from loans to farmers. It was stated that' at the present time interest derived from loans to local bodies was taxed by the maximum of only 2s'6d in the pound, whereas interest derived from loans to farmers was taxed up to 7s Id in the pound. A further resolution asked for a revision of the present method of levying income tax on companies.—The secretary said the matter had already been dealt with, and the letter was received. The draft rules of tho Royal Society were forwarded by the Council of Agriculture, and suggestions were asked for. —It was decided that the Association become a member of tho Royal Society. The New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association wrote asking the association to urge that the following resolution be given effect to; —” That the number of days a cow carries her calf, after starting her S.O. test, be published in the certificate of record and in the Journal of Agriculture, together witii the number of times a day she was milked during tho test.” —The motion was supported. The statement of accounts for the halfyear ended September 30, 1923, was'received. Twenty members signed a petition making application for the establishment of a branch, to be called the Wellington branch, to include the Wellington provincial district and the Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki provinces, with headquarters at Palmerston North. — Referred to the council. The Canterbury'branch forwarded a notice of motion to the effect that the next annual meeting of the association bo held in Palmerston North in June, 1924, and that at least one of the general meetings of the association be hold alternately in the South Island. The Secretary said rules provided that the council should have' jurisdiction in tho matter of the date, place, and time of tho annual meeting. Accordingly it was decided, on the motion of Mr Buick — 11 That iho motion passed at the last annual meeting be taken as « recommendation to the council in accordance with the rules, and the council consider same at its meeting to-night. MEETING OP COUNCIL. A meeting of the council of the Milking Shorthorn Association was held on Thuraday. The president (Mr J. M. Ranstead) occupied the chair. Mr J. C. Wright (Malapu) asked the council to take some action with reference to A. and P. shows permitting bulls not registered in the Milking Shorthorn Herd Books to be entered in milking shorthorn' classes. After discussion, it was resolved that it bo a condition that, for prizes contributed by the association, cattle must be registered or entered for registration in New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Books. The question of amending the condition* of entry for registration in the Herds Books was considered, and it was resolved to bring forward a motion at the annual meeting that all animals for registration must be entered before 12 months old, double fees to be charged up to two years of age, and the acceptance of entries over two years of age to be at the discretion of the council. The formal application to establish a branch of the association for Wellington, with a head office at Palmerston North, was approved. A sub-committee was set up to draw up a revised set ot rules for submission to the next annual meeting. The council accepted

An application was received for the £SO bonus offered by the association from Messrs Rar.stead Bros, in the senior three-year-old class for Matangi Ruth 11, her record being 1t.0321b of milk and 747.5611 b of batter-fat under semi-official test, thus establishing a record for the class, and cstaji. lishing a new record for the breed by beating the previous one of Manirou Princess by 471 b of butter-fat. Messrs Ranstead Bros, were heartily congratulated on the fine record. With reference to the £SO prize offered by the association for the various classes under S.O. test, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Buick, that on and after January I, 1925. the awarding of the association’s prizes of £SO for classes not then claimed be given to the cow making the highest record in her class in any one year under S.O. test oyer and above the standard set.
