BRITISH EMPIRE EXHIBITION.

TO THE F.DITOB, Sir, —Kindly permit me to appeal through the medium of your paper to the woolgrowers of Otago and Southland in connection with the' wool exhibit for the British Empire Exhibition. Six weeks ago the Canterbury District Committee, which is responsible for the selection of the wool, wrote to some 600 growers- . throughout tho dominion, asking if they would each donate two or three fleeces of their best wool, or any •number they felt inclined." Un to the present about "70 replies have been received promising approximately 500 fleeces, and most of those are from the North Island and Marlborough. Two thousand square feet of space bare beeen set aside in the New Zealand Pavilion for the dominion's wool exhibit, and it is of vital interest.to everyone concerned in the growing of wools in New Zealand that the wool displayed represents the best we. as a dominion, can produce. It would bo a serious error to allow other -wool-produc-ing countries to display exhibits equal or better than ours when we know' that our clip as a whole is superior to what these other countries can produce. All the growers to whom letters have .been addressed are known to produce highclass wools, but should there be other growers reached by this appeal I trust they will not bo backward in writing to the Canterbury District Committee, advising their willingness to. send along a few fleeces ■to assist the general cause. Such letters should be addressed to the Secretary, Canterbury District Committee, Department of Industries and Commerce, , P.O. Box 846, Christchurch, and should reach there by November 15, if possible. The wool when ready should bo packed in clean bags (calico" for preference) -and addressed to Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. (Ltd.)V private siding, Addington, to arrive There by December 15 next. All railage will be free. The wool will be classed by an expert and packed in stout paper-lined cases for shinrnent, "Home. On arrival there it. will be handled bya Bradford expert under the "committee's guidance. *• " Verv full arrangements have" been made bv the committee set up to attend to this important matter, and I feel sure that growers who have the" fortune to see the Exhibition in London will have reason to be proud of being associated with the wool industry in New Zealand. To date. North Island and Marlborough growers have come forward readily, "but Otago and Southland growers have not made the response anticipated. Considering that some of the best wool in the world is ■ grown in Otago and Southland. I sincerely trust that these provinces'will keep up the credit of the South by responding promptly and handsomely. Only a" few of the best flooces are asked from each growqy. The British Empire Exhibition will be visited by many millions from every part of the world. Let them see what New Zealand can grow in the shape of wool, and thus advertise our country 'and create a demand for our wool so that new orders, which mean more comnetition, may come our way, to raise the value of our clip and incidentally the credit of our dominion. Great efforts are being made to advertise our other productions, such as dairy produce, meat, seeds, etc. Wool has been given the pride of place in the Now' Zealand Pavilion: make it something of which to be proud.--I am. etc.. H. A. Salmon, Otago Representative Dominion AA’ool Committee. . CANTERBURY DISTRICT COMMITTEE" EXHIBITS OF SECONDARY INDUSTRIES. ("Peb United Press Association.l CHRISTCHURCH. November 3. At a meeting of.the Canterbury District Committee of the British Empire Exhibition. Air L. J. Schmitt, the secretary, reported on the progress made with the collection. of exhibits of secondary industries, and stated that 109 exhibits had been supplied—46 from Christchurch, 27 from Auckland, 16 from Wellington, and 20 from Dunedin. All the industries from the dominion had been grouped under 10 headings and according to the exhibits promised they would cover practically every tin© made ..in the dominion. Mr SohmiH said that one firm bad decided to send the dominion's champion ploughman Home to take part iu the ploughing matches. The committee had recommended that he should be allowed a plough which would be on exhibition for the purpose of taking part in the competitions. The classification of the exhibits would have to be done in Christchurch. The Dominion Advisory Council had been asked to send the Dominion Commissioner (Mr A. F. Roberts) to Christchurch in order that matters relating to the secondary industries exhibit could be explained to him. The nuestion of competitive awards, which has been the subject of a good deal of comment, was discussed, an d the following resolution was passed : —“T bat, in the opinion of the Canterbury District Coinmiltce, it is impossible at this stage to consider the question of awards, as the exhibits have not been collected on a competitive but on dominion representation basis.”
