SPORTS AND PASTIMES.

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. (Peb United Pans? Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 2. The weather was fine for training at Riccarton this morning. Most o£ the horses went on the plough. Work was very uninteresting, and was chiefly confined to steady pacing on the grass. Lady Fingers covered half a mile in 53 l-ssec, and Sir Rosebery did the same in 58sec. Mantua did five furlongs in Iniin 3 3-ssec on the plough, and Vagabond and Kilbird a mile in Imin 44 3-ssec. Roseday beat Angelo over a mile in Imin 43 3-ssec. Mountain Crag beat Auckland very easily over seven furlongs in Imin 33sec. Wink covered three furlongs in. 39seo, and Killochra went over the same in 43 2-s‘sec easily. Guncase, Balasor, and Golden Light covered half a mile in 52seo. Royal* Star and Jazz did five furlongs in Imin ssec. Most of the other horees were confined to half and three-quarter pacing, while a number did only trotting and cantering. To-day’s arrivals from the north were Printemps, Tenadees, Stream, and La Keve. (Fkom Ouh Special Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 2. Tho weather seems to bn set fair for the opening of the Now Zealand Cup meeting. The track is in good firm order, but is not hard, and even if a fall of rain occurs it will not seriously affect the going. Rumours were abroad yesterday that Roseday was amiss, but nothing could hay© shaped more pleasingly than he did this morning with Angelo, to whom' he gave over two stone and a comfortable beating in Imin 43 3-ssec. Roseday seems likely to start favourite, and nest to him Pilliewinkic and Palestrina are fancied. Others euch as Scotch Mixture and Muraahi have a strong following, but most of the wiseacres seem to bo concentrating their attention on Roseday and Pillicwinkie, and if anything creates a surpiise it may be Royal Star, who baa been responsible for a solid preparation and jonks well, although just a shade on the big side- . , , Rational and Tukia looked particularly well when seen on the track this morning, and so did Glentruin. Of the others nothing pleased better than Limelight. Tho unbeaten Killocra will probably start favourite for the Welcome Stakes, but Inferno is a really* nice colt, and? may create trouble. * Lockson looks a likely favourite in the Hurdles, but the southerners lyill no doubt be a bit loyal to Red Admiral and Rorke’s Drift. Soliform '-and Barn Ov.T, may bo popular picks in the Spring Stakes; and Black Ronald fills the eye as one that should make good. The Linwood Handicap is a very open race, but Bugle Note will have a good following. Balasor is engaged in the Apprentices Handicap, and so are other recent winners in Barmaid and Dutch Clock. Ardour will probably start favourite in the Riccarton Welter, but Castellan,-' Mantua, and Guncase are also engaged, and their supporters should not be disheartened if they miss on this particular occasion.
