FICKLENESS OF FORTUNE
BOY FINANCIER’S LUCK. NEW YORK, August 13. The vagaries of fickle Dame Fortune have been clearly illustrated in Wall street recently. A boy financier, Charles Saunders, enjoyed her smiles for some considerable time, and piled up a huge fortune as the result of successful dealings in what the Americans call “Piggly-Wiggly” stock. Saunders gained*his fortune in'a manner somewhat similar to that followed by Ponzi, the only difference being that Saunders kept within the law, while Ponzi .came within its reach. Ponzi manipulated postal coupons between the United States, Italy, and other countries, but Saunders kept to stocks and made his pile as honestly aa Wall street would let him. t Having enjoyed a remarkably good run of luck, Saunders eventually found that Dame Fortune no longer smiled on him. Where previously ho could not go wrong he now found that he could do little or nothing right. His fortune of 5,000,000 dollars (about £1,000,000), which he possessed three months ago, began to dwindle, and to-day he has gone “broke.” His wealth has vanished into thin air.
