FOOTBALL IN ENGLAND
OPENING 01’ THE SEASON. CENTENARY OF RUGBY UNION. Praia Aseociation—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, August 25. After an interval of only 15 weeks the Association Football season has opened. The Scottish League is already in full swing. There have been few notable transfers, and the English clubs are mostly commencing with the players that they had last season. This lack of important changes is attributable, to the league’s extension. It now embraces 88 clubs, and enormous fees are demanded for players. It is stated that this season the highest transfer fee is £SOOO, paid by Burnley to Plymouth Argyle for Hill (centre-half). The Rugby League opened with excellent prospects for a successful season. Competition is likely to be keener than ever in view of the selection of a team to tour Australia. The League’s Council has decided that the team shall leave England on April 11. The Rugby , Union’s centenary year promises to be the greatest in the history of the game. Many clubs will play five or six teams,. The only difficulty will be. ♦hat of securing sufficient grounds.—A. apd N.Z. Cable.
