FROM THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam" FRIDAY, JULY 31, 1863.
SIXTY YEARS AGO.
A copy of a report by Sergeant Burns, addressed to Mr Brannigan, the Commissioner of Police, upon the new Hogburn gold field, has been obligingly placed at our disposal. The report is in substance as follows: . . The following are the quoted prices current:—-Flour, L 33 per ton; bread (41b loaf), 2s 6d; butter, 4s per lb; meat, Is 2d; potatoes, 4d; tea, 4s; and sugar, Is. . . The number of miners on the ground was estimated at about 2000— a third of that number being engaged in wonung the Hogburn Gully itself, and the remainder on its tributaries. . . One death has occurred among the passengers by the Victory, lately from Glasgow, who are now stationed on the Quarantine ground. The deceased is a man who was rather advanced in years and had been in indifferent health throughout the passage. . . unr Tuapeka correspondent sends us the following items of news from that place;— . . The land sold last week realised very good prices, one section being sold at the rate of L 252 per acre. Great regret was exhibited by the buyers at the sale on account of the poor selection brought forward for sale, most of the allotments being upwards of a Quarter of a mile from the business part of the township. . .
