HEALTH AND LONGEVITY

DIETING THE SECRET. DOCTOR CONDEMNS TEA. LONDON, June 16. Dr Josiah Oldfield, speaking at the Eclectic Club, said : “ Give me the dieting of the race and soon they will live t 5 a hundred.” The ideal diet, he said, was porridge, fish, dried fruits, milk, cheese, salads, vegetables, oil. buttermilk, and onions. Owing to a large increase in the use of dried fruits, the richer class of English were attaining longer life. If the poorer classes would shun cheap moat and tea they would have even a better chance of long life, because they had Jess cha.nce of over-eating. Scotsmen and Jews were typical examples. The Scots on porridge, brose, and hard living became so brainy and hardy that they once filled the best paid positions the world over. Now luxurious eating was wasting their inherited vitality. Similarly the Jews no longer were hard-headed, clever, and gritty tike their forefathers.
