MOTOR CYCLE TRADE. QUESTION OF PREFERENCE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, May 30. The City Council rescinded a resolution giving preference to British and Austra-lian-made motor cycles. It was contended that since foreign competition had been discouraged the British manufacturers had taken advantage of the preference in the tariff to increase the prices. HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT. SYDNEY, May 30.

Representatives of the city and country hospitals assembled at the invitation ot the Chief Secretary to devise a scheme for the reorganisation of the conduct of the hospitals. A comprehensive report on the management of the New Zealand hospitals was submitted to the conference by Dr Armstrong; also a report on the hospitals in Victoria and South Australia. The South Australian hospitals are based on a system which is very similar to that in use in New Zealand. The conference has adjourned till Wednesday. METHODIST CONFERENCE. . ADELAIDE, May 30. The Methodist Conference has concluded. A resolution was carried commending the League of Nations as a likely means of ensuring the peace of the world. ARNCLIFFE TRAGEDY. YOUTH ARRESTED FOR MURDER. SYDNEY, May 30.' A youth of 18 has been arrested and charged with the murder of the boy Carratt. ■ Tho body of Percival Carratt, aged five, was found in the scrub near his parents' residence at Arncliffe. Death had been caused by smothering. The boy had been sent an errand to a shop a short distance from his home, and his prolonged absence caused a search to be made. The police state that there is no doubt that the child was taken to the spot whex-e he was found and asphyxiated by the pressure of a hand round the throat. (Received May 30, at 7.20 .p.m.) A youth named Leonard Henry Lovett, who was arrested in connection v/ith the death of the child Carratt, waa remanded on a charge of murder. The police evidence stated that accused was an English immigrant, who arrived in August last. When arrested he made a statement allegedly admitting that he enticed the child -who, owing to his long fair hair, he believed was a girl, into the bush, and in order to stop the boy crying he pressed his hands over his nose and mouth. When trie child failed to answer questions the accused became frightened and ran away. PREMIERS' CONFERENCE. TAXATION AGREEMENT ENDORSED. - MELBOURNE, Mav 30. At the conference last night the taxation agreement was endorsed, A tai *s to be levied by the Commonwealth Government on companies, not to exceed 2s 6d in the £ por capita. Payments to cease, and the States are to forgo the interest on transferred properties, and they will abandon a portion of the yield of company taxation. It is estimated that the Commonwealth Government will bo called on to sacrifice £1,400,000 under the rearrangement, which has been agreed to for five years. The Commonwealth Government, by retrenchment, expects to save £400,000 per annum in administration. The conference agreed to the principle of defining the Federal and State industries, but no finality waa reached on tho question of which industries should be Federal and which State. MYSTERIOUS DEATHS OF HORSES. MELBOURNE, May 30. Haffey has been committed for trial on a charge of horse killing. It was stated that the accused had made a signed confession admitting that he had killed a number of animals. He, however, pleaded not guilty. In connection with the recent mysterious deaths of horses, a man named Haffey was on March 23 arrested on a charge of shooting several horses.
