Taylor, chairman of the Wireless Conference,vstated that broadcasting on a large scale .was likely to be put operation in a few weeks’ time, as the* result of the decisions of the Melbourne Conference. MB HUGHES IN NEW ROLE. SYDNEY, May 28. Mr Hughes appeared in a new role last night, .when he read the lessons in the Church of England at Lavender Bay. He spoke with the rapidity of a politician rather than in the measured accents of a clergyman.
MAKURA QUARANTINED. SYDNEY, May 28. Tile mail steamer Makura arrived at the New South Wales port at 6 a.m. to-day from Vancouver and Auckland, and was placed in quarantine. The Makura is scheduled to leave Sydney on June 1 and Auckland on June 6 for Suva, Honolulu, and Vancouver. WHEAT HARVEST. SYDNEY, May 28. An official preliminary report of the 1922-23 wheat harvest shows that 109,751 more acres were cropped than during the previous year. The yield was 28,785,000 bushels, and the average 11.73 bushels per acre, RETURNED SOLDIERS’ GRIEVANCES. , MELBOURNE. May 28. Mr Bruce has explained that the dependends' of soldiers will not suffer through the dispute between the Federal Govern ment and the soldiers’ organisations, and added; “The Government at no time has departed from its policy of 'preference to soldiers, provided that other things are equal. The soldiers may criticise, but they have no right to dictate to the Govern ment.” A SUDDEN DEATH. ADELAIDE, May 28. Mr Basil Archer, a Tasmanian delegate to the Methodist Conference, died suddenly as the result of a heart attack. He had attended the annual general conferences for over 30 years. He was 85 years of age.
