ENVOYS IN AUSTRALIA.
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, May 28. (Received May 28, at 9.30 p.m.) The High Court has commenced the hearing of the application made on behalf of the Irish envoys for a rule nisi prohibiting the special board appointed by the Government from taking evidence on the question of their deportation. Argument was adjourned till Tuesday. FREE STATE AND' DE VALERA. REAL POINT AT ISSUE. THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE. LONDON, May 15. The failure of the Free State’s negotiations with de Valera has disappointed the country, which, however, generally supports the Government’s attitude. The negotiations hAve cleared the air, and shown, that the real point at issue is the oath of allegiance to the King and the Constitution. Tire Government will not make difficulties as regards details if the Republicans accept the principle of majority rule; but as regards the oath the Government is uncompromising. De Valera’s demand that the oath shall be disregarded involves repudiation of the Constitution. He is advised on all sides to accept the Government’s terms and to use lawful methods to persuade the people to overthrow the Constitution at the next ejections. If the campaign of outrage is renewed the Government is prepared for all emer gencies.
