SIXTY YEARS AGO

We should happy to receive communications on the subject of a proposal to divert the waters of Lake Wakatipu from the Kawarau to the Mataura, from persons competent to express an opinion thereon. The matter has already been much privately discussed by those whose general knowledge should make them reliable judges, but who have made no speciaji examination of the country proposed to bo o;>erated on with the view of testing the scheme. Their opinion is almost unanimous that the proposal holds out sufficient hopes to warrant its being carefully investigated. The throe points which require the most inquiry are the possibility of cutting a channel to the Mataura, the quantity of land that would bo acquired by flooding the Mataura, and the damge. if any, that would be done to the navigation of the lower portion of the Mataura. . . Gas was, for the first time in Dunedin, used on Saturday night for lighting the vestibule of the Princess Theatre. Owing, however, either to some defect in the apparatus, or excessive pressure of gas, the light was not so satisfactory as was anticipated. ______
