WELLINGTON ROADS.
BITUMEN CONCRETE EXPERIMENT. (Feom Odh Own Coebespondent.) WELLINGTON, May 1. Recently the Wellington City Corporation has been experimenting with bitumen concrete for street construction, and apparently with success. Cold, wet weather is not ’ conducive to good work in the laying down of bituminous concrete. It is necessary, states the Dominion, that the material should bo spread at a temperature of about 250 degrees Fahrenheit, and it is quite possible to do this in normal weather by running the bitumen from the heating machine on the. reclaimed land to the job by means of a motor tractor.* Even under such conditions the work has to be done expeditiously in order that the roller . shall pass over the sugary mass whilst it is still very hot. Low temperatures such as were experienced last week were quite against the work, as they cooled the bitumen far too quickly. It is unlikely, therefore, that much more of this work will be done until spring and summer.
