. , . AUCKLAND, May 1. In the Police Court George Frederick WilHam Kontze and Henry William Standee, two seamen on the steamer Waiwera, pleaded guilty to stealing cargo. They admitted -that they had gone amongst inflammable cargo with a naked light. They were each sentenced to sis months impnsonraent' WELLINGTON, May 1. Several meetings of householders last night decided to support a circular resolution regarding a protest against the Government limitation of subsidies on moneys raised, by local effort, also to urge on the Government the need 'or raising £3,OOO,U<X; for rebuilding schools. The opinion was expressed by some that there should ba a reversion to the old system of obtammg handwork supplies on a capitation basis, aa opposed to the present method of obtaining them through the department. . _ John Bouchard, a French-Canadian seaman on the acnoonor Forest Home, fell overboard last night. Efforts made to recover the body failed then, but this morning it was recovered from the bottom of the harbour.

On Sunday three residences in different parts of the town were visited during tho afternoon and evening while the occupants were absent, and sums of money and a bicycle were stolen. The proceeds of the burglaries amounted to about £SO. MASTERTON, May T. Ralph Percy Cooke, accountant in the Maslerton Borough gas office, who pleaded guilty to the theft of £SOO, in a statement to the police said that he was pressed by his creditors, and that he took money from the cash to help him out. He began gambling on racehorses, and took more money, intending to pay it back, but got further into the mire.
