OTAGO A. AND P. SOCIETY
TAHUXA BARK. LIXE ALONG VICTORIA STREET SUGGESTED. The committee has lost no time in submitting to the local bodies interested its proposal in regard to connecting Tahuna Park by railway. A conference, of the various " bodies was held at. ’.Tahuna Park yesterday morning. the Dunedin City Council being represented bv Councillors Wil sou, Hancock, la venter, and Scott, the St. Kilda Borough Council by tho Mayor (Mr -1. Dove). Councillors Seddon and Tolfer, and (lie (own clerk, the Ocean Bench Domain Board hv Messrs .1. H. Hancock and W. B. Taverner, and tho Otago A. and P. Society by Messrs D.. Andrew (president). R. A. Ewing, and R. A. S. Cantrell. Mr A. Sm.uill. of Tomahawk, was also present. Tho position was fully explained by Mr Andrew, who pointed out that a great, deal of the .success of the Summer Show depended on the conveniences that could be given to the exhibitors. In his opinion the nuestion of connecting the show grounds by railway was of the tit most importance to all concerned. Much of (he .suggested expenditure on the show grounds would mainly depend on (lie final decision in regard to the proposed rail way connect ion.
■Mr Andrew also suhmijted a plan which showed that bv encroaching on the corner of Culling Pari: (lie line might bo carried up Victoria street direct into the grounds. J his small encroachment, should not in any way interfere with Culling Park, but was necessary to comply with tho railway regulations. Tt was recognised by (hose present that whilst thov could not in any way commit their respective councils, tho society was entitled to even- assistance, as its operations wore directly a. benefit to all concerned. The general opinion was that, if arrangements could be made to utilise a small portion of the corner of Culling Park any alterations should ho of a permanent nature, and tho proposal carried through on a three-line system, which could then ho utilised both for tho running of the tramway service and the conveyance of slock.
After close inspection of the proposal and full consideration it was unanimously decided that the Otago A. and P. Society should place the whole proposal before the Minister of Railways and the chief engineer and ascertain if the Department was prepared to grant any modified plan to enable the lino to bo constructed without in any way seriously affecting the reserve. It was admitted that the proposal submitted by the society was the most feasible, and would meet its requirements for some time. The committee anticipates no difficulty in obtaining the necessary permission annually from tho Ocean Bench Domain Board for any reasonable accommodation that might be required to enable tho society to handle empty trucks cm the present show grounds. The president expressed his appreciation for tho hopeful manner in which the different representatives had spoken in connection with the proposal, and, on behalf of the society, expressed his thanks to them for meeting the representatives of the society.
