INMATES ESCAPE SAFELY. (Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND. March A St,. Joseph’s Orphanage at Takapona, con* taming 16 rooms, including four dormitories, was destroyed by fire after midnight. The inmates, of whom there were 109, including l 14 infants, escaped without injury, and have been accommodated temporarily in the neighbourhood. The fire originated in a bathroom, and is believed to have started from a gas jet, which under the regulations had to bo kept lighted all night. The building was erected about 70 years ago by French missionaries under Bishop Pempallier, wth walls of solid masonry, and was used as a college of education of Maori and European youths until 1893, when it waa -= taken over by the Sisters of Meroy as an ' orphanage.
