FORM THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” MONDAY, MARCH 2, 1863.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Ono of the finest summers that have ever been experienced since Otago became a European settlement is fast drawing to a close. After months of a truly enjoyable climate, the symptoms of the approach ot winter have already begun to show themselves. Already the fall of snow in the mountainous districts gives a silent but impressive warning to those who are working in the isolated parts of the country, and to such we would enforce the truth of the old adage, “to bo forewarned is to be forearmed.” We do not desire to give currency to unfounded and exaggerated fears respecting the severity of the winter m the Lake country, but wo may reasonably anticipate that in a country so rugged and broken—with few or no roads—and solitary bands of miners scattered about in lonely and sequestered gullies at a considerable distance from depots, serious distress if not disaster will bo experienced during _the forthcoming winter, unless due precautions ore taken.

What becomes of all the thousands of empty bottles which are daily delivered of their corks in Dunedin would be a matter almost worthy of the Editor of Notes and Queries. The disposal of a portion of the hordes may be accounted for in the fact that men with trucks and bottle baskets are frequently to be seen perambulating the town from door to door carrying a few gross, and inquiring particularly for bottles -with clean labels endorsed “Byass’s Ale,” “Thin s Whisky,” “Dozen's Sherry,” and “Martell s Brandy”; but the mystery is still unsolved as to what becomes of the immense bulk remaining.
